The Photographer

I grew up in Caribou, Maine and Greenwich, Connecticut. As a kid, photography helped me bridge the gap between life in these two extremes.

Through middle and high school, I was incredibly fortunate to travel the world with my father. Regular access to one of my school's "pool" 35mm SLRs provided me with a way to share my globe-trotting experiences with friends and family. I learned early that even an excited day of explaining can never really convey just how many steps separate town from the temple at the top of the hillside in Kyoto, how chilling is the stare of a flying fox or how the sun's rays can at once dance among clouds and trout in high Andean glacial lakes.

While the sleek Nikon N8008 I received on graduation night exposed miles of film through my university days, "work" soon got the better of my photography. For nearly a decade, my camera collected dust and my favorite albums became dog-eared.

Fast-forward several years to a warm California fall afternoon when a freak waterskiing mishap tore up my back and abruptly ended my competitive cycling hobby. Despite my love of the sport, I couldn't just go watch a bike race. Not being able to compete killed me. A camera however, provided an active distraction that allowed me return to the racing scene with a purpose. My racing experience gave me a leg up on the sport's other photographers and before I knew it I was shooting for the industry's biggest magazines, equipment companies and teams.

Forced time off the bike also opened my eyes to the magical San Francisco Bay Area where I had lived a tunnel-vision, fast-lane life of start-up boom and bust for nearly a decade. As my love for the art and science of photography was coming back into focus, my wife and I decided to escape from the bubble of Marin County and move back to the real world. The Rocky Mountains became our new home and I turned my focus to commercial photography. The years since have been filled with good times and adventures behind the lens.

Today, when I am not on assignment or in the studio, I spend my free time exploring the trails, trout streams and vistas of the Rocky Mountains with my wife, young daughter and the world's best German Shepherd, Greta.
